Hello Adam,

If I understand the purpose of this thread, it is mainly for the discussion of the color (or colour)( ), of the IDF Armor, which is an issue since I've started modeling 35 years ago.

I will start with a teaser...

1948 color - ?
50's color - ?
60's 70's - Humbrol #72 as a base.
80's till today - Humbrol #84

Wew will discuss the reference photos, the photography results, and what is the best method to achieve the proper hue.

I think that Adam can start with his chart, as done on the Tiran 5, M151 , Mk. 3D and the recent masterpiece of the Gal Batash.

thanks to all , in advance

MM

You are right Michael,

This in addition to the thread below to discuss paint colours and mixes.

I think that maybe these 2 threads should be joined?

Maybe we'll keep this one simple. Just your paint mixes?

Well here's mine -

1948 - no model yet
1950's - no model yet
1960's - 70's - Tamiya XF57 and XF20 (50/50) Tiran 5
1980's to today - Tamiya XF49 (1 part) and XF20 (2 parts) Merkava 3D & Magach 6b Gal Batash

I normally use Tamiya Acrylics - mixed with Lacquer Thinner 50/50 for spraying.
I then use Vallejo "Stone Grey" for highlighting detail - by brush.

Adam

Before painting dirty, dusty and real AFV models, a comprehensive research is needed on the subject and the materials.

As I cannot add anything to you regarding material and technics, I will try to post some examples of weathering on tanks, and some close-ups (in the future) of the different patterns weather efects.

Here is an opening picture of 3 Merkava 4 in the same location, and photography conditions, with different look. The tanks arrived to this "meeting" point, from different locations.

The add ons on a model, can change the base color into something completely different.

- Natural materials on the texture - dust, mud, raindrops,etc..
- Addons due to service - rust, wear, oil stains, paint chips, paint drops/leak etc...
-Other materials than steel- Rubber, plastic, wood, ropes, tin, cloth etc..

All the above are helping to change the base colors and blend them with the materials and efects.

Please continue the subject, and call for the specific close-ups.

Michael

Usefull post!

For 1980 to present I used the White Ensign Models Israeli sand grey WEMCC ARI 01

For my Magch 6b Gal the color was used plain, and the overall look have a brown shade.

Although it seems that the actual color is the same since the early '80s, I noticed that during the Lebanon war, in 1982, all the vehicles had a grey shade. For my Shot kal I added some Humbrol 64 to match the look seen on the photographs.

Following a few pics, from internet and one of two old and tired Shot kals that I saw on the Golan. Just to show what I mean with grey shade.

Ciao!

Dino

Great thread/Idea, here's a little contribution from me....

For 1960's - 70's - Lifecolour - Israeli Sandgrey 61-73 (#UA020).

Fo my M38A1 Israeli Recce Jeep, i applied as follows..
- Primed it first with Humbrol H#1.
- Pre-shaded with a mixture of Tamiya Nato black and Lifecolour - Israeli Sandgrey 61-73 (#UA020).
- Straight top coat of UA020 misted on, trying to leave the pre-shade still show through.
- Finally a highlight of UA020 mixed with Tamiya XF-1 (Flat White).

Cheers
Andy

Question for Adam-In your AFV Modeler article on the Merkava IIID, you mention a base coat of 50:50 Buff:Neutral Grey, followed by a grey/green filter. Do you prefer the Khaki/Grey blend as used on your Magach Gal Batash for later vehicles? Just getting ready to start painting my Merk IV's, might try different shades on each.

Jim

Hi Jim,

Yes you are right, I did use that mix on the 3D.

I now prefer to use the XF49 1 part to XF20 2 parts mix as the base.

This colour is virtually obscured anyway with the weathering...

for my next project i will be use tamiya acrilycs, in the adam way.

I think that is important learn to read a picture, the old pictures lost a lot of colours, the digital are more accurate but all have diferents variables: sun, hour weather etc. that make the colours variations.

Gentlemen,

The question, is not only what color to use.
The question, to my understanding, is what the he_l the color is in real.

I can post here thousands of examples of completely different colors, sometimes on the same AFV.

Like this one...

Michael,
Are current IDF vehicles routinely repainted as part of a maintenance procedure or is this only done when the old paint wears out?

Maybe there are slightly different shades of the same colour depending on who paints it??

The colour would no doubt fade with wear as well, so a freshly painted vehicle could look different to one that has been out in the sun for a while?

Cheers
Kev
